What is a smart home?
Smart homes use various forms of technology, including Internet-connected smart devices, to enable you to monitor and manage appliances, as well as systems such as lighting and heating systems. These smart devices tend to be connected to each other through a smart hub.
At Smart Home Construction, our smart homes are also built with energy-efficiency in mind.
What are some examples of smart devices?
Smart devices are generally connected to the Internet through a Wi-Fi network. These devices can be integrated into a single system and can be controlled via a customized app on your smartphone or another smart device. Some of the most common smart devices used in a smart home include:
- Thermostats: They allow you to have full control and customization of the temperature in your home. If utilized right, they can also save you money on electricity bills.
- Locks: Smart locks give you the option of controlling locks even when you are not home.
- Lights: Can be controlled from a smartphone app and can include customizable brightness, darkness, and color schemes based on your specific preferences.
- Plugs: Allow you to control your standard, regular objects, and can monitor energy consumption of anything plugged into them.
- Home Security Devices: Home security devices – which can include cameras, sensors, and alarms – can monitor the interior and exterior of your home as well as alert you of potential intruders, record video, and even contact law enforcement.
How do smart devices work?
In order to get your smart devices running, you’ll generally have three options:
- Wi-Fi: Devices are connected to your router or gateway and can basically be used while you are anywhere else.
- Bluetooth: Smart devices can be directly connected to your phone or other smart devices.
- IEEE 802.15.4, aka Zigbee: This system was designed specifically for device-to-device communication and generally works through a smart hub.
What is a smart hub?
A smart hub is essentially the nucleus of all of your smart devices. A smart home hub can be hardware or software that keeps all your smart devices connected and allows you to control communication among them.
Are there security risks associated with smart home devices?
Like with anything else dealing with technology, issues with security and privacy have to be kept in mind. Smart home devices will generally come with quality safety features that will best protect you from any malicious attacks.
Is a smart home system complicated to use?
Not at all. Everything is controlled from a wall-mounted keypad, hand-held remote, tablet or smartphone. Smart home apps are very intuitive and generally have clearly labeled buttons to help you accomplish the task at hand. Smart home systems are designed to be as simple as possible so that users can accomplish their goals at just the press of a button.
Can I install smart home devices myself?
Like any other home improvement project, some smart home projects are quick and easy, while others not so much. Obviously, there are physical tasks that need to be done as well as tasks for setting up the technology.
Does owning a smart home have any financial benefits?
Smart homes come with many cost-saving benefits. For instance, several organizations have found that smart thermostats can help you save an average of 10 to 12 percent on heating bills and 15 percent on cooling. Additionally, many home insurance companies are now offering reduced insurance rates for homes that have smart locks, smoke alarms, and other smart security safety features.
Smart home technology is becoming more popular and many homes are adopting smart appliances and other features. While there is no guarantee that a smart home will increase in value, it is likely that the smart home technology features you choose can help to increase resale value as smart homes and smart devices become more in demand.
Do I have to make everything in my home “smart?”
Absolutely not. Smart homes are scalable and can be made according to your wants and needs. Start off small and add additional items as you see fit in the future.
